Learning sustainability in school (BINK)

Duration: 01.06.2008 - 31.05.2011

Educational Institutions' Contribution to Fostering Sustainable Consumption among Youths and Young Adults
Background
Educational institutions - and schools in particular - have a strong influence on the behaviour, attitudes and values of children and adolescents. It would be desirable if they would also make a contribution to inducing this group of persons to shift their consumption behaviour toward greater sustainability. These institutions could encourage young people to reflect on their consumption patterns and try out new types of sustainable behaviour.

Project aims
Using empirical studies conducted at selected schools and universities, this project will develop change processes, set them in motion and assess their success. This project revolves around the theory that classroom instruction and everyday behaviour (formal and informal learning settings) at educational institutions must constructively mesh with one another so that a new culture of consumption develops among children and adolescents not only in the area of nutrition but also with regard to mobility and energy consumption.
